Parabens: Hype or Harm?

Le danger des parabens : info ou intox ?
Table of Contents

For several years now, the labels 'paraben-free' or 'no parabens' have become a common sight on countless cosmetic products, from shampoos and conditioners to various hair treatments. This has even evolved into a significant marketing claim for many brands. But how legitimate is this assertion? Are the dangers of parabens truly substantiated by science, or is this 'paraben-free' movement just another passing beauty trend?

What Are Parabens?

They are preservatives. They therefore inhibit the proliferation of microbes, fungi, and bacteria in our cosmetic products.

It All Started When…

A British study was published in 2004 on the possible correlation between parabens and breast cancer.

Following this publication, AFSSAPS (French Agency for the Sanitary Safety of Health Products) took a closer look at all products containing parabens. Today, studies on the health impacts of parabens, such as the already mentioned breast cancer and also male fertility problems, are not conclusive. Links have not been established, but doubt persists.

The only certainty to date is the allergenic risk, which has been known for a long time.

Do Good Parabens Exist?

Parabens are naturally present in several foods such as red fruits, carrots, onions, beans, and certain cereals. We consume them regularly without apparent concern.

But then the question of quantity arises, given that all our beauty products, from shampoo to shower gel to body cream, are likely to contain parabens. Not to mention certain medications and numerous food products that also contain them.

So, What Do We Do?!

When in doubt, isn't it better to abstain? Personally, I prefer to buy products labeled "paraben-free" like those from the Centifolia brand. However, one must remain cautious about new preservatives used by the cosmetic industry.

Here is a list of preservatives to avoid: triclosan, BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), EDTA (Ethylenediamine Tetraacetic Acid), phenoxyethanol.
